What's Your Toss Type?
Over my many years as a "clutter counselor," I've personally helped hundreds of people let go of thousands of pounds of clutter--especially paper clutter. Along the way, I've noticed that when it comes to getting rid of paper, there seems to be at least five different "tossing styles":
The Gentle Touch = gently tossing or dropping papers directly into the wastebasket, perhaps allowing them to float a bit on their way down.
The Careful Fold = folding each paper precisely in half before discarding.
The Casual Crumple = balling up each piece of paper before dropping it into a receptacle.
The Forceful Pitch = a more athletic version of the Casual Crumple, where the balled-up sheet of paper is flung like a projectile at the trash container.
The Vicious Rip = each paper is held over the receptacle as it is systematically ripped up into smaller pieces.
Which toss type are you? And what does it symbolize? Well, I'm not a psychologist--I have no idea! But I believe that what matters is not how you toss paper clutter, just that you do itas often as possible.
In Chapter Four of LET GO OF CLUTTER, you'll find the quickest, most effective and pain-free methods for plowing through piles of paper and weeding files. And Chapter Seven will help you overcome the desire to acquire and accumulate too much information--one of the leading causing of a condition I call "paperosis misplacea."
